Holden Racing Team back on Top

The Holden Racing Team’s Garth Tander and James Courtney have triumphed in emphatic style on the streets of Townsville this afternoon, finishing first and second in today’s second 200km race for the Sucrogen Townville 400.

After Tander and Courtney qualified in fourth and eighth positions respectively, both drivers were clean off the line. Having settled into a competitive rhythm during the opening stages, until the Safety Car was called onto the circuit on lap nine when Lee Holdsworth's entry came to a halt on turn 11.

Both Tander and Courtney were immediately called into pit lane with the team electing to double stack the factory Holden Commodores for fuel and soft tyres. With their stops complete, both drivers re-entered the race in a competitive position and began to surge forward.

Tander put together a succession on quick laps to take the race lead on lap 22. The 2007 Champion then continued to circulate with impressive race pace and established a sizable gap on the field. Stopping for the second time on lap 39 for soft tyres on the rear only, Tander had enough of a margin over his rivals to re-join the race without losing a place (fourth). He again took the lead on lap 50 and held on to take a very well deserved victory.

In hot pursuit of Tander was his HRT teammate, James Courtney. Courtney also adopted a two stop approach and by doing so, completed the first form finish for the Holden Racing Team since Sandown 2009.

The team will now head back to its Clayton based workshop to commence preparations for the Coates Hire Ipswich 300 in little over two weeks’ time.
