Perth SuperSprint Preview

The Holden Racing Team heads west, across the Nullarbor, to Perth this week for the third event of the V8 Supercars Championship.

Barbagallo Raceway, or Wanneroo Raceway as it was known prior to 1992, is famous for its abrasive surface and high tyre degradation. While the circuit was resurfaced 11 years ago the surrounding sand which blows onto the track has caused it to age in a very different way to other tracks the V8 Supercars race on.

The biggest talking point in the lead up to this year’s race however, is the introduction of the British Beru f1 tyre pressure sensors which will be used for the first time in this category, this weekend. V8 Supercars primary rationale is safety, expecting the new mechanism to detect deflating tyres before an incident is triggered.

Teams will now be provided with live tyre pressure telemetry to the car dashboard and back to the pits during on-track sessions, which will greatly assist teams in managing the minimum 17psi tyre pressure requirement.

Garth Tander is a born and bred Perth boy and has had two pole positions and three race wins at the circuit, while James Courtney is yet to qualify on pole or finish on the podium
