The final event of the 2016 Supercars Championship is finally upon us. From the highs of winning at the Clipsal 500 and the Sandown 500, to the lows of crashing out of Bathurst, the season has provided the expected amount of theatre.
The Sydney 500 marks several “last times”, the last time the Supercars Championship will race around the streets of Sydney Olympic Park, the last time Garth Tander will drive for the Holden Racing Team, and the last time Walkinshaw Racing will race under the Holden Racing Team brand.
Since its inception in 2009, the Sydney 500 has been the finale of the Supercars and over the years has been the place where Champions have been crowned, where torrential rain has forced the cancellation of racing, and where conditions have been so hot drivers have suffered severe dehydration. In 2017 the season finale will be contested on the streets of Newcastle.
We also say good-bye and thank you to Garth Tander who been with Walkinshaw Racing (WR) for a total of 12 years; nine of those with the Holden Racing Team. He achieved 50 race wins with WR out of a total of 54 in his Supercars career so far.
After 26 years of being one of the most famous brands in Australian motorsport, the legendary lion and helmet logo will be seen on the side of a Holden supercar for the final time before being retired. Since its first race back in 1990 at Amaroo Park, the Holden Racing Team has won a whopping 179 races which is more than any other Supercars Team. Add to that seven Bathurst wins, six championships, and five teams’ championships and you have an impressive resume.
FROM THE BOSS’ DESK
Adrian Burgess, Managing Director:
“We’re looking forward to Sydney, it’s the last race of the year and we’d like to finish on a high note. It’s been a long season and a tough one with mixed results for us.”
“We have made some good progress with the cars over the last six months and while this year’s championship is out of our reach, we head to Sydney with a focus on further car development and preparing for the 2017 season.”
“It’s GT’s last race with us and it’s our last race as the Holden Racing Team, and I’d like to thank Garth and Holden for helping our team achieve what we have to date. We’d like to finish this chapter of our history off strongly and hopefully come away with second place in the teams’ championship.”
