Family Go Cart Racing

NORM Wright is revving up for this year's Auskart Racing championship Race Series, and having won the race series over the past two years, he is aiming to make 2013 his hat trick year.

The Thorneside plumber, who used to race motorcycles 20 years ago, said he began go kart racing at Willowbank Raceway four years ago, and raced there for about 12 months before starting to race at Lakeside Park with Auskart Racing, the only four-stroke go kart club in Brisbane that races on bitumen.

A scrutineer with Auskart Racing, Norm said go kart racing was suited to people of most ages.

"In classes, we have bambinos, juniors, senior lights and senior heavies, and opens," he said.

"Race day runs all day, with races lasting about 10 or 15 minutes.

"That's 15 to 20 laps, and it's full on. There's about 850 metres for a lap, so you're doing the kilometres."

Norm, who is sponsored by Hog's Breath Cafe and ECL Mobil, said he encouraged other Redland residents to go along and watch the races or to join the club and try racing.

"It's a great family day out," he said.

"It's outside in the fresh air and it's a family orientated sport - the kids love it.

"If people are interested in motor sport, it's a cost-effective way to start racing, and the adrenaline rush from watching is great too.

"It's also a motor sport that is reasonably close to Brisbane.

"It takes me about 35 minutes to get there from my place."

Auskart Racing meets every second Sunday from February to December at Lakeside Park, Lakeside Road, Kurwongbah, with test-and-tune sessions and races held on alternate fortnights.

The 2013 championship Race Series begins on Sunday, October 27, followed by races on November 3, November 17 and December 1.

Gates at Lakeside open at 8am.

The races are open to all financial members of Auskart Racing who have a competition license, with newcomers able to join and apply for a license at any time.
