Involvement and Education at MG Kailis

INVOLVEMENT AND EDUCATION

As the engineering staff at MG Kailis monitor and review the oil every 250 hours, they are constantly aware of the Group’s aim to reduce its consumption of oil and energy and its commitment to the long term goal of maximising the use of renewable energy sources.

They are continuing to work with Mobil Oil to inform the fishing industry of the benefits of synthetic oil. Synthetic oil works more consistently than mineral oil because the molecules in fully synthetic lubricants are consistent in shape and size and subsequently provides excellent resistance to oxidation and better protection against wear. As shown below, if you can imagine a room full of balls as presenting mineral oil, it would be full of soccer balls, tennis balls, basketballs etc. With fully synthetic lubricant, however, there would only be soccer balls.

The cost of the right oil is not the real cost of the lubrication. The penalties of incorrect lubricant choice, such as lower production due to increased maintenance and shutdowns as well as increased power consumption, are the actual costs involved.

As mentioned, fishing companies are built on tradition and it has been a difficult task to change the ways companies operate, however, MG Kailis have found that cold, hard facts such as:

  • reduced waste and fewer oil changes

  • longer component life and improved cleanliness

  • better protection and less equipment failure

  • lower labour costs

have been crucial in changing attitudes. MG Kailis have only used Mobil synthetics due to their synthetics being “real” and their technical backup is unsurpassed compared to others.
