Synthetic oil works more consistently than mineral oil because the molecules in fully synthetic lubricants are consistent in shape and size and subsequently provides excellent resistance to oxidation and better protection against wear. As shown below, if you can imagine a room full of balls as presenting mineral oil, it would be full of soccer balls, tennis balls, basketballs etc. With fully synthetic lubricant, however, there would only be soccer balls.

The cost of the right oil is not the real cost of the lubrication. The penalties of incorrect lubricant choice, such as lower production due to increased maintenance and shutdowns as well as increased power consumption, are the actual costs involved.
